Angel Jackson, a former Jackson State University basketball player, has made history as the first athlete from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to compete in Athletes Unlimited (AU), a professional women's basketball league.
While drafted by the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA, she was ultimately cut from the roster. Jackson embraced the opportunity to join AU to continue her professional career. The league, in its fourth season, features 40 players divided into four teams who compete over four weeks. Players earn points for team wins and individual performance.
Jackson's participation is particularly significant as it highlights the talent within HBCUs, and AU is even hosting an HBCU Night in her honor.
Her former coach at Jackson State praised Jackson's talent and athleticism, noting her versatility as a player. Jackson hopes her performance in AU will not only increase her visibility but also pave the way for more HBCU players to be drafted and recognized for their skills. She also emphasized the importance of leagues like AU for player development, especially for those transitioning to professional basketball.
